Deströyer 666 - Defiance

This album is probably the most accessible thing the band has released, the production is really clean and the whole album is more melodic than their previous effort. But even with that I’m really diggin’ this release, lots of memorable songs and the overall quality is still there. A worthy addiction to their discography!

Deviser - Unspeakable Cults

Debut full-lenght from ’96 by this Greek horde. Epic black metal with symphonic touches and the unavoidable Hellenic sound; the music is brilliantly composed, very melodic yet with incredible replay value. Not much to say really, another classic from the Greek scene, highly recommended!!

Svart - Vanära, Vanmakt och Avsmak

Strong debut from this Swedish one-man band; the music reminds me a bit of Shining’s third album, great catchy riffs mixed with atmospheric passages. The band shows potential to write even better material, I’m looking forward to future releases!

Limbonic Art - 1995-1996

Excellent compilation featuring early Limbonic Art material. This is LA in their rawest form, much of the material was later re-recorded on Epitome of Illusions, but this one in my opinion sounds much better. Extremely recommended!

Anubi

One of the most interesting and unique bands in black metal, Anubi was formed back in ’92 and released a couple of demos and a full-length before splitting up due to the untimely death of the main guy. The band’s demos are just pure gold, unique black metal, extremely well composed songs that just have a truly special atmosphere. The debut on the other hand features very little black metal, it’s more avant-garde metal, a logical progression, and needless to say it’s a fucking classic! Mandatory!!!!!

Debut album from this Swedish one-man band. I won’t bother saying much here, if you’re into Austere, Lyrinx and similar bands get this!

Valefar - Frigus Ex Tenebris Venit

First demo by this Lithuanian band, formed by members of Anubi and Nahash. This is really good raw black metal, features strange sung vocals reminiscent of Urfaust. The compositions are at times really weird which is hardly surprising as it features the guys from Anubi. Also, the fifth song is basically what black metal wound sound on a Nintendo. Mandatory stuff if you’re into slightly weird black metal.

Old Wainds - Death Nord Kult

Latest album. This one is slightly faster and the production is a bit rawer then the album before, definitely features a more dynamic song-writing and lots of death metal riffs. The quality is still there tho. Recommended!

Hesperia - In Honorem Herois - Aeneidos Metalli Apotheosis part II

Third album from this rather unknown Italian one-man band. Extremely enjoyable raw black metal, mostly fast material with the occasional slower interludes (which are fucking awesome); the production is a bit hard to swallow as are the vocals, took me some time to really get into it, but after a couple of listens I found myself really enjoying this release. A unique and really interesting release, personally one of the highlights of the year.
(I also recommend the debut, it’s a bit more experimental but definitely worth the listen; I’m looking for their second album, if anyone has it feel free to post it on the comments/chat/email)

Circle of Ouroborus - Old Ghosts

Compilation featuring unreleased material. Basically the same CoO we all love (hate?), strange atmospheric black metal mixed with post-punk, really has a unique atmosphere. This one has some really memorable songs, so if you enjoyed the full-lengths definitely get this. Also, this is not such a bad place to start if you’re new to the band.

Old Wainds - Scalding Coldness / Обжигающий холодный

Second album by this Russian band. Excellent riff-based black metal, mostly mid-paced music; the song-writing is great and the whole album is just pure quality. Definitely one of the strongest bands from Russia, and this album just proves why!

Illapa

Great Peruvian (thanks for the correction) band, they've been around for a while but I unfortunately just recently found about them. The debut album is fucking amazing, extremely well played black metal with a really unique sound. The second album, released a full 14 years later, although not as good as the debut, pretty much picks up where they left off, which is commendable consider how much time passed between the releases. The band actually reminds me a bit of Xibalba only Illapa seems to be influenced by the Inca culture. Essential listening!!

Arcanus Tenebrae - odium in homines

Debut album from this Greek band. Really excellent raw black metal; the sound is really old-school, mostly mid-paced with really top-notch song-writing; raw with just enough catchiness. Highly recommended!!

Voqkrre - Palans in Pestilens

Excellent debut from this French duo. Raw melancholic black metal, the band basically sounds like a mix of Celestia and Darvulia; raw with a unique somber mood. One of the best debuts this year, well worth checking out!!

Frozn - Requiem on My Grave

First and only demo from this Japanese horde. Excellent raw black metal, really well composed songs, mostly fast but with some great atmospheric passages. The vocals are relentless; the guy seriously screams his lungs out!
Check em’ out, real good stuff!

Furze - UTD

Third album from this Norwegian band, released in ’07. Bizarre black metal perfection, the album is full of strange compositions; there are lots of actually fun riffs (especially on the first part of the album) that for some reason sound just so fucking awesome. Slower more doomy parts are also prominent, and again they’re extremely well executed. The release is kind of hard to get into, definitely multiple listens required to fully appreciate it, but totally worth it. One of the more unique bands around and this album is probably their finest moment!
(be sure to check out their other two albums)

Hiver Noir - From The Dead Times Of Depression

Last demo from this underground French band. Lo-fi atmospheric black metal, really good stuff here, the music actually reminds me of the excellent Lycanthropy’s spell as does the production (i.e. there isn’t any). This is the kind of music that’s made for cassettes and I love it!

Självmord - Självhatets Skönhet

Raw black metal from Sweden, this is their only demo. The label description sums it up perfectly: “Hateful Black Metal, in the best Burzum vein, with some moments reminding me of Forgotten Woods! No light, no hope, just beauty of self hate until suicide!!!

Jerusolima Est Perdita - Marsch Der Kolonne

Raw, militaristic and harsh Black Metal from Germany. The demo starts off with a folk song and then fades into this totally dark power electronics-like riff and militaristic drums, just fucking awesome!! The rest of the demo is unfortunately pretty much straight up black metal, similar to Blackdeath; the first two songs basically make this worth listening, the rest is rather average.

New album from Spain’s finest. Another excellent album to add to their already impressive discography; the music is still the same, well played black metal with everything being at the highest level of quality. for fuck's sake people

Ok, let's start off by saying that every single fucker that downloaded Fauna's Rain album, and enjoyed it, to go fucking BUY IT; that's because sales are low for this cd and the label can't release the follow up "Hunt". Since I'm extremely fond of the material of both Fauna and Aurora Borealis and I really want to own “Hunt” I urge people to BUY “Rain”; it’s not even that expensive and the packaging is awesome.

This event of course has showed me that posting new releases on the blog is actually hindering small labels, even though I want to promote their work it seems the ratio of people downloading and buying with people that just download is just too great (for example 1300 downloads for the fauna album and I seriously doubt even half of these bought the cd). If I continue receiving requests from labels to remove links I’ll just stop posting releases from the last two years and focus on slightly older and out of print releases.

(V.E.G.A.) - Alienforest - A Sick Mind's Hologram

As requested by Muninn, Alienforest with the bonus track. I didn't really dig Cocaine and this one isn’t all that impressive either. Pretty much a hit and miss affair, some great songs but mostly average material; the bonus song is kinda awesome.
