Embers - Shadows

Pretty decent black metal with flourishes of death metal. The songs have decent use of keyboards, without becoming cheesy or symphonic or just fucking lame. What is lame is the cover that is included/have on their bandcamp site. It has tour dates on it, so I am using another of their logos with it.

Vestiges - The Descent of Man

Vestiges formed in January of 2010 as a two-piece band. Influenced by hardcore, black metal, crust, screamo, and post-rock, the band set out to incorporate elements of each genre to articulate their message both musically and lyrically. A third member was added to the band shortly before entering the studio to record The Descent Of Man. The band and a filmmaker are currently in the process of producing a film to visually capture the theme of The Descent Of Man. The Descent Of Man follows the creation, the evolution, and the eventual annihilation of mankind. Today, we find ourselves hoping to reverse the damage that we have done and struggling to sustain what little earth we have yet to rape repeatedly. We validate this existence with stories that justify our behavior and our role in the natural world. The promise of salvation in a land we have yet to see has clouded our judgment in a land that is right before our eyes. Industrialization, militarization, overpopulation, theism, specieism, and nihilism are regarded as evolution and progress. Our greed and ignorance have been celebrated and our past has been forgotten. We were meant to be a part of nature. We were not meant to conquer nature. We were given life and we have done everything in our power to bring death upon everything in our path, including ourselves. There will be horrifying consequences for what we have done.

This is an interesting release. If you are looking for the blackened crust chaos of Martyrdod or Dishammer, this isnt what you are looking for. However if you are looking more towards a black metal that hybridizes with the epic crust that bands like Fall of Efrafa play, this is a pretty damn spot on choice.

Ungoliant - Demo

Our good friend Nick from Disguster sent me this earlier. He is playing the drums like a fucking brute here. Raw, punked out black metal that catches the ethos of the first wave without sounding hokey.

Wholy Failure - Songs of Surrender

Disclaiming it now: this isn't black metal. However, I can't record a god damn thing without a bit of black metal showing up in the sound. This is, as some of you know, an EP by Wholy Failure, another act I am involved with. The other WF releases are harsh ambient/noise, but this one is a Shoegaze/Post Punk hybrid, and as always, spicy little hints of BM always flavoring the mix. I hope some of you freaks enjoy it.

Yellow Eyes - Silence Threads The Evening's Cloth

Shit. This is a great fucking record. Melodic, but not cheesy. Emotive, without being "depressive". Yellow Eyes take modern black metal, add a bit of post rock and chaotic hardcore influence, and create a great record. This is their first, not even fully available yet. So download it and enjoy.

Monument - I

Great fucking raw atmospheric black metal out of Chicago. It sounds like the Lurker of Chalice lp coated in more reverb and with occasional choral vocals.

Sangre Y Tierra - Estrujándonos en el Mar

Another terrific EP by one our favorite newer bands. This is gonna be his last release before his final LP, "Beyond Her There are Glorious Swells". Terrific mid to slower paced black metal with powerful vocals and lyrics that celebrate their own culture, instead of celebrating the nordic influence. Damn great release and while I can't wait for BHTAGS, I want him to keep producing music.

Abyssgale- The Coming Plague

Punky d-beat driven black metal with excellent production and composure from Greece. Too bad this is their only release. Bassist and drummer play in Dodsferd, as well as a handful of other Greek bands. Seriously though, one of the best black metal releases that encompasses anything punk.

Servile Sect - Eternal Mind

A pleasant surprise in my inbox, I posted their debut some years ago here, this second release is more on the experimental side, dark psychedelic lo-fi music, not really black metal but still worth a listen.

Negură Bunget- Vîrstele Pămîntului

After some changes within the band and 4 years rest, Negură Bunget return. Good album, but a bit too much folk stuff if you ask me. Feels like a watered down Om (which i think is one of the top 5 greatest black metal albums of the 2000's).

Trails of Anguish-Relentless Abhorrence Of Misery's Grievance

The people have spoken and here's Trails of Anguish's first EP. The first track is a bonus that they added on for the second addition abroad (ironically enough, it's probably the worst track on the ep).

Canadian tech-melo whatever black metal that's amazing. I'll upload similar projects by the members in a bit.

Trails Of Anguish - Scarred Memento

Long broken up, Trails of Anguish were an interesting band who released two great eps. They're very similar (in terms of style, band members, etc) to Nefastus Dies and have friends in the French-Candian metalcore sceen (Despised Icon, on Dissonance, etc). I dig the shit out of this band. Hard to label, but I'd say melodic/technical black metal. Just give it a shot before you make any presumptions because I know it would sound like something I'd hate. But the vocals are amazing and the riffs are absurdly catchy and pleasing; not to mention this drummer is insane.

Here's the second ep, I'll upload the first if you guys dig it.

Lords of Lightspeed (pre WITTR)

Here's a Lords of Lightspeed 7" uploaded by Zero over at It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Crustmas. It's a melodic hardcore band with both of the Weaver brothers that make up Wolves in the Throne Room. It's not black metal at all, but I'm sure many of you would be interested in it. It's not bad at all. I had been looking for this for awhile, nice to know Zero's got my back. Now if I could just find some Gifthorse (Wrest's prog rock band).

Willing Feet - Demo

This is raw. Not "recorded in an analog studio" raw. This is recorded in a robotic dumpster, that is getting anally raped by another dumpster without lube, into a boombox on the external mic raw. In fact, I have no fucking clue how it sounds due to how raw it is. I do know that it's pretty sweet and if you like the BTC bands, you'll probably like this.

Endless Disease - Our Dawn is the End

Its been a while and I have finally got started on the huge backlog of submissions we have. Thought I'd start with something that is really good. ED is from Texas. They play nice and crusty black metal. Not as d-beat reliant as some crusty black can be, you can't help but think of Craft and their brand of misanthropy with this demo.

Johann Wolfgang Pozoj

Excellent new band from Croatia; J.W. Pozoj plays some really great progressive tinged black metal; The first album is not bad, showing the potential of the band but things really pick up on the second album which features some incredibly strong material, especially on the cleaner parts where the band really shines; also, the packaging of the second album compliments the music perfectly, a really awesome looking release to own. There is loads of potential here, definitely a band to keep an eye out for. Highly recommended!!

1349-1349 (ep)

So I don't know 'bout y'all, but I think old 1349 was pretty bitchin.' Liberation and this, their 2001 EP and also their first non-demo release, were pure unadulterated early 90's Mayhem/Gorgoroth worship. That said, they didn't try and hide what they were, and I like that. 1349 and Liberation were honest to devil black metal worship. Similar to other worship bands (old Municipal Waste to Wehrmacht, Sleep to Black Sabbath, or Warhammer to Hellhammer) the unoriginality was excused and the fun/competency or whatever else was what was admired.

There's a key component to this release, the cover is of Celtic Frost (the Usurper) not Pink Floyd, think on that (speaking of which that's Ravn drumming on the cover, not Frost).Frost used to be able to drum, and this shows it, I'm convinced the reason why 1349 and Satyricon suck is because he has bad tendinitis and can't drum fast well.

So if you want something ahead of the curve hit up Negura Bunget, Altar of Plagues, or Liturgy, but if you want second wave black metal done right listen to this (it's odd to think this is almost 10 years old).

Pensées Nocturnes- Grotesque

Pensées Nocturnes is a 1 man black metal band from France mixing in theatrics and medieval/ neo-classical sounds. The guitar playing is excellent, even some great solos (and if the drums are real there's amazing playing there too). Typically, this isn't my cup of tea. Some of theatrical parts really annoy me, but it's in the same sense of Arcturus, this is just a lot odder. That being said, I enjoy it and probably will keep enjoying it.

I don't see how Khaos[] could call this band typical, anything but, i assure you that some of the melodramatic orchestral parts are worth sitting through for the whole product.

I don't know what's with the French, maybe it's their drinking water, but last year alone we saw two blues tribute/tinged albums from France (Diamatregon's Crossroads and Glorior Belli's Meet Us at the Southern Sign- and for the record I thought Diamatregon's lp was far better). You also have bands like Mystic Forest and even Peste Noire who fool around with blues/medieval sounds.

Put your notions aside and give this a listen if you're in the mood for something diverse, bizarre, and theatrical- vaudeville to say the least.

Really not sure where to buy this, give me a heads up if you find where.
