Lustre - Night Spirit

Trance inducing black metal from this Swedish one-man band; only two 20 minute songs filled with slow atmospheric riffs; think Trancelike Void mixed with Burzum (Filosofem). An enjoyable listen!

IC Rex - Vedenjakaja

Latest album from this underrated Finnish one-man band. IC Rex play excellent occult black metal; the band strong point is the excellent use of melodic passages creating a unique overall mood. Even though this release is not as good as the monumental previous album, that I urge everyone to get, it’s still a great piece of black metal and is well worth listening!

Incursus - Eternal Funeral Trance

Demonic black metal from the US, this is one of the better albums this year. Musically it reminds me a bit of Nightbringer only more straightforward, fast and powerful riffs with incredible vocals make the songs sound really powerful. Can’t go wrong here, extremely recommended!

Teeth Gnashers

Awesome new band from the US; the first demo is raw black metal in the vein of Bone Awl, rehearsal like quality but for some reason incredibly listenable, the last song is fucking great. The second ep features one acoustic song with black metal vocals and a fucked up Animal Collective cover, I found this one to be a really fun listen.
Basically the band sounds like they’re fucking around, but it’s not half bad, give it a listen!

Tiger Throat - self titled

An odd release from this new band playing experimental “black” metal; the release is instrumental and I really can’t explain well what it sounds like, but it definitely is an interesting and even fun listen. Here’s the label description that will probably confuse you even more:
A new brand of black metal - Think an Insrumental Bone Awl thrown into a blender with Mono and Health and top it of the glimmering desolate guitar atmosphere of White Metal all packaged in one odd colorful package.

Nokturnal Mortum - The Voice of Steel

I'm usually not that crazy for music like this, but probably because of all of the festivities I'm in the mood for some accessible folky black metal and what better choice than the new Nokturnal Mortum.

Toil - Lullabies for Insects

New EP, released this year but recorded back in ’07. The music on this one is quite different from the debut, focusing more on a melancholic mood and musically similar to Lurker’s other project, Frail (now known as Crooked Necks). A great listen!

Hallow - Self titled

Another project from Mark McCoy (Haxan, Ancestors…).The first half of the album has some fine raw crust / black metal, towards the end the music shifts more on atmosphere with two slow songs and two experimental ones. Another awesome release from him that is unfortunately sold-out.

Auspicium - Death Will Claim Us All

This was actually recorded quite a while before "Dawnland". It was actually working on this that made me branch off and do Avulse. I felt that it was too "straightforward" to be what I wanted Auspicium to be. So I set it aside for almost a year and then returned to it recently. Musically, its Black Metal, plain and simple. Lyrics about mass genocide and human idiocy co-inside with the ones about the ocean and forests. Faster than anything else Auspicium has done. Not to fret, there are touches of the atmosphere and general oddfuckery that endears or alienates people to Auspicium.
There's even a Simon and Garfunkel cover.

I only made a few of these, and they all sold out. I'll repost this when I press more.

Verivala - Kalliolle, Kukkulalle

Fuck yeah, new Verivala! This release is even better than the debut, the music is in the same vein but the sound is much more fitting, “warmer” and less trebly giving it a death metal feel. This is Finnish black metal at its absolute best, mandatory!!

Celestia - Retrospectra

Excellent compilation featuring old Celestia material, everything remastered giving it a strong clean sound that was much needed seeing that some of these songs were released only on tapes. Incredibly enjoyable release, a must for fans and also a great introduction to those new to this unique melancholic black metal band.

Disguster - Flesh and Fear

Another new New England band. Holy shit this is some great stuff. Really fucking raw, fuzzy, production. Its got some LLN feel in parts. Imagine listening to Lurker of Chalice (or Leviathan) out of broken speakers, while on acid and morphine simultaneously. They are planning on releasing a split with Sangre Y Terra this year. I for one can't wait for that, and the hope that it would be in physical release because, if they improve on this release, it will be spectacular.

Il Sangue - Elegia 4: ...In Still Desolation

Incredible blackened funeral doom from the US. Slow, dread filled music covered in tons of ear splitting reverb, this stuff will make your ears bleed. The vocals sound menacing and fit the music perfectly, there also some calm clear parts that are a welcome break from the slow harshness. Released only on vinyl with basically no exposure that I know of, this is truly a hidden gem. A mandatory release for all fans of doom and black metal!

Drastus - Serpent's Chalice - Materia Prima

New ep from this excellent French one-man band. Incredibly powerful and well composed black metal that sounds like a mix of newer Deathspell Omega and CYT; the great production and musical ability gives it a modern sound and the clean vocals are also well executed. This is by far the best release by the band. Can’t wait for more releases from this guy, extremely recommended!!

Circle of Ouroborus - Tree of Knowledge

Another CoO release, this time a full-length released this year but recorded back in ’07. The sound is slightly more accessible, there are some tracks that make great us of keyboards, and the even some tracks have slightly different vocal styles from the usual half-spoken / half-sung ones; this applies mostly for the song “Show Me the Way to the Wishing Wall”, which is probably one their better songs. Anyway, a good release that gets better with each listen.

Sangre Y Tierra - Cuando Los Blancos Vienen

The point of this blog has always been to broach new music to fans of black metal. So I sometimes get mail from bands asking me to post releases of theirs up here. I gladly do this. Sangre Y Tierra is one of these bands. Its one guy, who also happens to be in Frontier (who I will be posting material from shortly). Musically, its raw with a strong underlying melodic current. It seems to be influenced by Bekhira, DSO, and Просинец. The vocals would not sound out of place on a DSBM album, as they are tortured howls. I think this is a great first release and has some great unorthidox elements. Enjoy, hellions!

Furdidurke - November 2005 Rehersal

Black metal stripped to the bone. Don’t be put off by this being a rehearsal, the recording quality is more than acceptable. The music is almost like a mix of Vordr and Bone Awl but not as punk based. Just put this on repeat and listen away…

Avulse - Granted but Grace from this World

Filthy, dirty, drunken beastial black metal punk shit. Leaks out your ass like yesterday's dinner of nachos and gin. I had a lot of fun making this one, nights of blasting Bathory and Von, while drinking Maker's Mark. This might be the last thing I do for a while with Avulse. I wouldn't say enjoy it. Throw back a couple bourbons, drink some beer, and decide for yourself.

Circle of Ouroborus - IPSOS

More goodness from one of the oddest and most interesting Finnish bands. Three songs creating an eerie melancholic mood that is so unique to them, I don’t any other band that really sounds like this. Recommended, but approach with caution!

Reverorum ib Malacht - Demo 09

Latest demo from this mysterious Swedish project. The music this time is some kind of atmospheric black metal mixed with dark rock all with strange hypnotic prayer like vocals; the whole release is quite trance-inducing and has an air of mystery, probably due to the “lo-fi” production and the fact that it’s released on tape. Highly recommended!

Worship Black Twilight

Excellent compilation featuring Black Twilight Circle bands, those familiar with the name know what to except. All of the tracks are exclusive except for the ones by Volahn and Arizmenda. The range of songs presented is wide; from the insane Ashdautas, probably the most well known BTC band, with their knifelike vocals to the epic Kallathon and the more straightforward Axeman and even the dissonant, post-rockish, anonymous artist, everything just reeks of quality.
In my opinion the best compilation this year, unfortunately I think it’s sold out, it comes with a zine and is limited to 400 copies.

Totalselfhatred - Self Titled

Debut album from this Finnish band, released last year. Well composed, mostly mid-paced, doom laden black metal. The sound is quite accessible and features quite a few really melodic passages; there are some really memorable parts, especially on the first part of the album, unfortunately the second part isn’t as good, nonetheless I found this to be an enjoyable listen!
For those interested the band features members of Korgonthurus and Horna.
