Ride for Revenge - Wisdom of the Few

Slow, atmospheric, bass driven and dirty as fuck black metal, it sounds like it was recorded in hell, this is just so goddamn good it blows my mind. Fucking mandatory!!!!!

Asmodee - Aequilanx

Only release by this French band playing some really fucking awesome raw black metal; considering the date of release and the music I’m pretty sure that this is pre-S.V.E.S.T. so needless to say it’s an absolutely essential listen!

Ancalagon - First Age : Entering Legenda

First and only release from this now defunct French band. Excellent black metal featuring exceptional song-writing; the songs are full of great riffs and memorable passages, there are also some acoustic parts that really add to the epic atmosphere. This is a real gem in my opinion, highly recommended!

NDE - Krieg Blut Ehre Asche

Debut album from this mysterious Belgian act. NDE plays some of the most oppressive and well made fusion of noise and black metal with hints of martial industrial; the sound created is just pure necrotic power. Cannot go wrong here, if you’re a fan of any of the aforementioned genres this is a must; one of the best releases this year!

Vhernen - Sepulchral Sorrows

Incredible demo from this one-man band, released in '05. Doom laden black metal of the highest quality, slow trance inducing riffs and otherworldly shrieking vocals create a perfect desolate mood. Atmospheric music at its best!
This was re-released together with the excellent ".S.y.b.e.r.i.a." on the "The Funeral Era", which makes it a mandatory release to own, much better than the debut in my opinion!

Raspberry Bulbs - Finally Burst... With Fluid

Simple punkish black metal from a Bone Awl member; not as fierce as Bone Awl but still quite enjoyable. I'm a sucker for this kind of music so I can't but recommend it.

Hate Forest - Live at Kolovorot 2002

Here's a rare live video of Hate Forest, the video quality is so-so but the sound is incredibly clear, there's not much movement on the stage, they just play their shit, and they do it fucking well!

Wolfdusk - Down of Christianity

Old school black / death metal from Argentina. Killer riffs, muddy production and broken English, seriously what more do I need to say here? Check’em out!!!

Neige et Noirceur - Philosophie des Arts Occultes

Now here’s a band I completely forgot about, this is his newest ep. The last release I listened was “L'Abîme Des Jours…” which showed great potential and this release shows that he is going in the right direction. The song-writing is more distinct and in my opinion way better than the early demos; the production is slightly clearer but still very much raw, fitting perfectly the atmospheric music. I suggest listening this release in its entirety, and not only the black metal song, because the two ambient songs are just as good.

Echtra - Burn It All Away

Incredible release from one of the masterminds of Fauna. First off ignore the metal-archives genre, this is pure atmospheric black metal, no drone and no folk, maybe the new release has those elements but this one sure doesn’t. The music is very monotonous, repetitive and trance inducing thanks, in part, to the extreme length of each song; the sound is raw and the, scarcely used, vocals are quite low in the mix, basically a perfect mix for an album of this nature. A mandatory release for fans of early Branikald and Paysage D’hiver.

Thesyre - Résistance

New album from this Canadian horde; rockin’ black metal with totally badass riffs and occasionaly sung vocals, those familiar with the band know what to expect, this is probably one of the strongest albums released by the band thus far, recommended!

Borgia / Ysengrin - Ars Magna Moriendi

Awesome split release between two fairly new French bands. Borgia is the band to check out here, incredibly well written “technical” black / death metal; the music reminds me of C.Y.T with a hint of Portal, especially on the more death metal parts, great stuff!
Ysengrin plays death / doom, good material, but Borgia is the clearly the highlight of this split.

Visthia - Reditus Conscientia

A great album from this Italian band; faster paced black metal that reminds a bit of newer Setherial, but much better. Funnily enough the highlight of the album is the one slower paced song. Definitely worth checking out!

Satyricon - Roadkill Extravaganza

As requested, Satyricon’s only dvd release; a compilation of clips from the 2000 world tour. Basically a glimpse into the life on tour, some random interviews and live footage from selected shows. An interesting watch, I guess…

Mgla

Awesome Polish band headed by a member Kriegsmaschine. Raw black metal with an atmospheric edge; the EP’s are more straightforward mid-paced black metal, while the full-length focuses more on atmosphere. Needless to say the song-writing is of the highest quality on all the releases… highly recommended!

Demoncy - Empire of the Fallen Angel

Extremely underrated album from Demoncy; usually you hear people praising “Joined In Darkness”, but this one is, in my opinion, more than a worthy addition to their discography. The music is more in the vein of older Swedish black metal bands, faster paced black metal with a melodic touch; incredibly enjoyable material!

Thy Repentance - Through the Twilight Eyes of Frost

Second album from this Russian duo, originally recorded in ‘97 but released in ’03. The music is lo-fi raw melodic black metal; hellish, cold and distant yet highly atmospheric, somewhat reminiscent of early Emperor. The fourth song is a bit different with repetitive martial drumming and insane vocals, sounds more akin to Akitsa. There are also some female vocals that are really well incorporated and add to the haunting nature of the recording. A real gem of raw black metal!

Kraken Duumvirate - From the Dying Soil to the Eternal Sea

Debut Ep from this rather mysterious Finnish band. Featuring two songs and an intro, Kraken Duumvirate show how minimal funeral doom / black metal should sound like. The songs are extremely repetitive with the vocals low in the mix; simple, yet so effective! The atmosphere created is perfect, like it was recorded in an underwater cave; the sound is desolate and haunting. The only fault of this release is that it’s extremely short, only two songs make you beg for more, hopefully we’ll see more of this band in the future.

Endstille (FLAC)

One of my favorite German bands, Endstille plays fast war-influenced black metal; the music is brutal yet trance-inducing. There is little variation on each new release, they always stick to the same formula, and are one of the few bands that can get away with it! Essential!!

Wodensthrone - Loss

Debut album from this UK band. Excellent atmospheric black metal with great production, courtesy of ‘Negura Music’; the music is incredibly well written, with atmospheric, epic and even some more straightforward parts; “Black Moss” a perfect example, starting off with a strong, almost brutal, first part then progressing into an atmospheric section before the epic finale. Awesome release!
