Blackdeath - Vortex

Latest album from this Russian band, released last year. This is probably one of their best releases; excellent riff-based raw black metal with a unique vibe, there are also some more atmospheric songs, all extremely enjoyable. This release is much much better then the disappointing material on the Leviathan split!

The Horn - Dawning of An Ancient Sun / The Silent Land

First official release from this Australian one-man band. The Horn plays a very unique kind of black metal; the music focuses on Egyptian mythology and he really hit the atmosphere spot-on, totally otherworldly and dark. The album seamlessly shifts from really fast songs to atmospheric and slower ones; also, ambient songs are quite prominent, especially on the second disc, and they do an excellent job of setting the dark mood. Even though I really enjoyed this release I do think it’s quite an acquired taste, since the production will probably put off a lot of people not to mention the overly obvious drum machine (that sounds totally awesome in my opinion). Anyway, give it a shot, a highly recommended release!

Black Candle - Nightfire

First LP from this Luxembourgian horde. It ends up being a blend of more midpaced, riff-based black metal, mixed with some fast atmospheric black metal. It's got some odd fucking beats that shouldn't work, but do and rule.

Kult Ov Azazel - Destorying The Sacred

New album, no change in sound, still the same relentlessly fast black metal; good stuff, really excellent if you’re in the mood for it…

Odal - On Old Paths

Joy to my ears! Fucking awesome atmospheric black metal; not the overly melodic kind of these days but the good ol’Darkthrone kind. The release compiles pre-debut material; absolutely mandatory!

Nihternnes - The Mouthless Dead

New release from this British one-man band. Really melodic atmospheric black metal, the release is worth having mostly for the second song, a 20 minute epic that features everything you’d want from an atmospheric black metal band. The fist song is also good; I’d write some more but I’m not really up for it, basically this guy has a lot of potential to write good material, I haven’t heard the debut but I’ll definitely check it out.
Recommended!!

Vinland vs. Finland

Excellent four way split between these raw black metal bands. Bone Awl and Vordr need no introduction; Hammer and Volkurah play some competent raw black metal, good stuff but no match for the pure awesomeness of Bone Awl and Vordr. Essential!!

Leichengott - Cyrograf

Debut album from this Polish horde. Well played riff-based black metal, the music flows between relentless passages to slightly slower, more atmospheric, sections. The production is excellent and the bass, not only can be heard, but actually adds more depth to album. Excellent release, right up there with the best from the Polish scene!

Bellum / Rhune - Vinland Rising

Excellent split between these two underground us bands. Bellum plays some real good raw black metal, mostly mid-paced with some slow passages; Rhune performs great old-Graveland worshipping black metal. Both bands deliver good material, especially Rhune, so check ‘em out!

Dusk - Örök Halálban

New album from these Hungarian masters. Atmospheric black metal bliss, long monotonous compositions, usually slow with really good use of keyboards; the music does an excellent job of pulling you in. If you enjoyed their previous outputs you're gonna love this one, recommended!!

Ordo Templi Orientis - Where Eternally Autumn Winds Blow

Excellent atmospheric black metal from this Belarusian one-man band. Slow despair filled songs, monotonous as fuck with a spot-on atmosphere. This is right up there with the best in the genre. Highly recommended!!
Also don’t be put off by the low bitrate, the sound quality is actually good.

Oranssi Pazuzu - Muukalainen Puhuu

Debut release from this new Finnish act. Totally awesome psychedelic black metal, spacey rock compositions mixed with (black) metal all coated in raspy vocals sung in Finnish; I think the cover says it all.
Extremely enjoyable material, definitely one of the more unique black metal releases in recent years!

Gram - May I Never Hear Your Voices Again

“Distress and despair, anger, hate and distrust, tiredness (weariness) and the wish for loneliness are the dark feelings of GRAM, but there is also the will to find the place of eternal ecstasy (bliss)…
Expect an album with nature sounding and emotional black metal art!”

Too lazy for a description, good stuff here!

Firth of Damnation - Crossing the Unhallowed Path

Third album from this US based one-man band. Truly exceptional black metal; the music is mostly faster paced with incredible use of keyboards creating an obscure atmosphere; the songs are usually short but never feel that way. This is my first taste of the band but I’ll definitely check out their previous works as this one is incredibly enjoyable!
Unfortunately it’s released only on tape and quite limited at that, so be sure to get a copy before it's sold out!

Haxan

One of the many projects by Mark McCoy of Ancestros. The ep presented contains some totally awesome raw black metal, think older Darkthrone but with a kick! Extremely recommended!!!

Csejthe - La Mort du Prince Noir

Debut album from this Canadian band. Really enjoyable melodic black metal; the music is riff-based and mostly mid-paced accompanied by a somewhat clean production. A competent debut showing that the band definitely has potential to write strong material.

Joyless - Wild Signs of The Endtimes

A great compilation featuring songs from their debut and the “blue in the face” EP from ’99. The songs from the debut are the only black metal ones here, and needless to say they’re just so fucking awesome; melodic black metal perfection! (These songs are also featured on the excellent “Baklengs Mot Stupet” release by Forgotten Woods). The songs from the EP are basically folk rock with some metal influences, real good stuff, personally much better than their second album. There are also two previously unreleased songs, probably from the same era.

Malkuth - Sefirah Gevurah

Second album. A logical continuation from the debut, raw black metal done right; the sound is stronger this time around and the song-writing is more diverse while still marinating the malignant atmosphere. Truly exceptional release and one my favorites this year!

Black Majesty - Baphe Metis

Amazing demo by this new Norwegian one-man band. Dark and raw satanic black metal, seriously awesome stuff, the music is reminiscent of early Black Funeral. The release only features two black metal songs the rest is ambience which perfectly fits in my opinion. Looking forward to the debut!
