Nargaroth

Nargaroth is a (usually) one-man black metal act from Germany. Kanwulf, the sole musician and lyricist, founded the band in 1989, though it wasn't until about 10 years later that he released the first Nargaroth full-length, Herbstleyd. The band's year of creation, as well as the release dates of the first few demos and the time some of the songs supposedly were written can be seen as doubtful, due to contradicting interviews.

With the success of Herbstleyd under his wing, and a rather large "cult" following in the black metal underground, Kanwulf has proceeded to make 3 more full-lengths to this day, with a number of EPs in between. Nargaroth remains a powerful force in the idiom of German black metal.He also performed as the guitarist of Judas Iscariot and likewise live.

Thorns

Thorns is a Norwegian black metal band. They made two highly influential demos in the early 1990s, Grymyrk and Trøndertun, but has only officially released one recording since it was founded in 1989. Thorns mastermind Blackthorn (Snorre W. Ruch) was convicted in the murder of Euronymous (accompanying Varg Vikernes on the long car journey to Euronymous' flat.) He was convicted to 8 years in prison. Formed asStigma Diabolicm( Nor ); changed name to Thorns after some two years. Snorre (Blackthorn) has also rehearsed withMayhem( Nor).

Ildjarn

Ildjarn is a raw black metal solo project from Norway that features themes such as reverence for nature and hatred of humanity. Ildjarn is probably the most caustic and ‘unlistenable' of black metal projects from Norway. Most Ildjarn material was recorded in the first half of the Nineties; the Hardangervidda ambient project (featuring Nidhogg) is the very last work recorded by the artist. However, demand from fans led to Ildjarn's decision to make the recordings from his vault available, as well as repressing most of his discography. The ``Ildjarn Is Dead`` double album should seal Ildjarn's discographic legacy.

Lurker Of Chalice

A side-project of the artist known as "Wrest" whose main musical outlet is known as Leviathan. Wrest plays all the instruments and does all the recording himself. Disbanded in 2003-2004 due to Wrest not having enough time to continue the project. According to a 2004 interview with Wrest there are 4 unreleased full-length albums by Lurker of Chalice. Lurker of Chalice has signed to End All Life Productions for a new full length album

Von

VON is an influential black metal band from the United States. They are known for their extremely simplistic and evil style. A typical Von song would have one central riff, rarely composed of more than 4 notes, and fast, almost blast beat style drumming, the snare alternating with the bass drum respectively. This repetitive style gave their songs the feeling of an evil chant or ritual.

Dimmu Borgir

Named for an area of Icelandic lava fields, Dimmu Borgir was formed in 1993 by the trio of Shagrath, Silenoz, and Tjodalv (the first two have remained the leaders of the band, while Tjodalv recently left to form Susperia) and is unquestionably one of the most well-known and accomplished Norwegian melodic black metal bands in the scene. The current lineup has an impressive lineage, with ties to other established bands such as Cradle Of Filth , Borknagar and Old Man's Child. As one might expect, the earlier material is a bit rawer and less developed, as the band has matured and progressed with each release without sacrificing intensity or forgetting their roots. Drummer Nick Barker was rather suddenly dismissed from the band in February 2004, with no reason given from him or the band at the time (Barker later surmised that the band probably wanted a fellow Norwegian) His recently named replacement is Panzerchrist drummer Reno Killerich. Fimbulwinter

Fimbulwinter is an early Norwegian black metal band which broke up in 1994 after the release of their one and only album. Shagrath later went on to the now so famous Dimmu Borgir.
"Fimbul Winter" means in Norse mythology the first part of Ragnarok- the winter takes over the earth and after that all of the Gods begin to fight with each other.

Drudkh

This is quite a find, a somewhat enigmatic Ukranian band led by one Roman Saenko, who apparently fronts a couple of other Ukranian black metal bands, among them Hate Forest. Autumn Aurora, the second of three Drudkh releases, is a fine example of the sort of atmospheric, laid-back pagan black metal that Burzum made popular several years ago, with some similarities to other bands such as Primordial and perhaps early Empyrium. The guitars ebb and flow, the vocals sparse and distant, the mood wintry and frozen, clearly influenced by the Norwegian scene though not the blastbeat variety. Very well done.

Ganzmord

Ganzmord means "Complete Murder" in German. Its a one man band , Utteraly harsh and choiatic grim cruelty from the obscurest of the American Black Metal Underground. High -energy , high - density , heavily distorted vicious Blackened mayhem for diehard supporters of cult BM. Ganzmord projects a pure stream of hatres and aggression , combining both harsh melodies and choas to convey the true essence of black metal. All rituals recorded to date including the attacks on the "Monolithic In Darkness" CD were recoreded while in complete solutude by Ganzmord alone.

Opera IX

Opera IX is one of the more unique bands to come out of Italy in some time. Unlike a lot of present-day Italian bands (many of whom are in the power/prog metal field), Opera IX's style is an intriguing and original mix of black, doom, and goth metal, with excellent songwriting and highlighted by vocalist Cadaveria (until recently, as mentioned below). She is quite a find, able to transition from beautiful soprano to goth crooning to death growls and black rasps, often within the same song. Her vocals, along with the interplay between keyboards and guitars, set this band apart, there's not really any other band that sounds like this. The songs are long but never boring, as the band gracefully transitions from one section to the next, effortlessly changing mood from softer passages to aggressive riffing. An ethereal mood pervades over much of the music, often quite haunting (this is where the goth comparisons come from). It took a few listens to get into this band, but the more one listens, the more one appreciates them.

Xasthur is a suicidal black metal one-man-band from the United States. The mastermind behind Xasthur calls himself Malefic (real name Scott Conner). Keep of Kalessin

One of a seemingly bottomless well of Norwegian metal bands, Keep Of Kalessin was formed in 1994, initially as Ildsjaer, and released two commendable old-school black metal albums in the late nineties. Agnen, the latter of those two albums, is pretty typical black metal fare, guitars and drums racing along with the standard vocal style intact. Certainly far from bad, but perhaps lacking a truely unique identity. The original lineup broke up in 2000, but leader Obsidian C was determined not to quit. He joined Satyricon as a touring guitarist, and in doing so was able to recruit legendary Satyricon drummer Frost to join a new version of KOK. Not only that, another big name in the black metal scene, Attila Csihar agreed to become the vocalist. This new all-star trio released an MCD, Reclaim, in 2003. Neither Frost nor Csihar are still in the band, but they continue, released Armada in 2006.

Darkspace

Darkspace is an ambient black metal band from Switzerland, comprising of three humans who call themselves Wroth, Zaaral and Zorgh. Spaceage names for an equally space age project. True to its name what Darkspace' music describes is the nothingness of space.

Their style is characterized by an ambient surrounding, hazy production and monotonic sounds, but which is somewhat uniquely melodic and variable. Mute guitar passages with blastbeats take turns with milder passages and sometimes even completely electronic passages, providing a fitting tribute to the cold, dark and void like atmosphere which fills their work. Unlike most pure black metal bands, Darkspace also uses some rhythmic, death-metal-oriented parts. This is evident in their first full-length-album "Dark Space I".

Darkspace borrows a great deal of influence from electronic music, eerie, ambient synthlines which flow from the guitars. Passage with clear electronic clubkicks or total voidlike ambience are incorporated into vocal samples alongside the unnaturally lyricless and very alien sounding screams.
