Another punk infused black metal album, regardless of their new oeuvre it is still an enjoyable piece of work. Seems like for the past two albums they're lyrics have been critiquing metal thrown into the commercial pipeline; which I don't blame them given the tumult of several black metal / death metal bands being thrown in the "popular" music gamut (especially all these horrid epic symphony metal bands). I'm just wondering, how long will they keep this type of work going? Every Darkthrone album to me has some kind of unique sound to it, these past three however have a ubiquitous theme going on.
This band is no longer relevant. They could fart into a microphone, press it onto CD, and people would still claim its their best work yet.
I'm not claiming that it is their best album, just because it's black metal doesn't mean it has to follow a strict/conservative "purist" musical structure (if that is what you're implying). What black metal contemporaries do you think are relevant right now and why?
Didn't mean to come across as a troll or anything, its just that Darkthrone sounds like they're going through the motions. I happen to like blackthrash stuff - this just sounds composed on the spot, without any passion. BM bands today that wow me are few and far between, but I dig Storming Darkness A LOT, and the latest Leviathan and Deathsmell Ortega gets high marks as well. I have to admit though that my personal taste in this genre is pretty narrowminded.
Just when you thought they couldn't get any worse. Sorry guys, this is just amateurish, like a couple of kids trying to be Darkthrone. I know they're capable of much better - why keep doing this to your fans?
I don't know what's is so bad about the new Darkthrone, quite enjoyable. And it's not at all that punky more like thrashy and all around old school; definitely not amateurish.
Anyway, good release!
It is ridiculous to criticise this band, they are not playing trend or scene or whatever, and all criticisms put to them can be nothing but personal opinion on wether you like the music or not. Anymore than than and it is mindless scene or trend drivel. They played the game, and thats over , they do what they like outside of their critics 15 year old child-like fumblings of musical fashion and such,. Seriously If you have some "highbrow" bitch to share go back to myspace.
