Sleeping Peonies - Rose curl, Sea swirl

""Rose curl, Sea swirl" is both the debut of Norfolk English band Sleeping Peonies and the first label release for Khrysanthoney. This pro duplicated/printed CDR is a 7 track demo featuring Sleeping Peonies' unique style of bass heavy black metal and gently flowing dreampop rhythms. Dark, tranquil and utterly dreamy, "Rose curl, Sea Swirl" is a sugary treat for lovers of groups as diverse as Alcest, Velvet Cacoon and Cocteau Twins."

One of the finest releases this year, perfectly soothing black metal, ideal listening for these warm summer days.
I suggest picking a copy since it's really inexpensive especially considering the quality.

Special thanks to rottenzombie for providing the flac rip.

Terzij de Horde - A Rage of Rapture Against the Dying of the Light

Really awesome black metal from Holland, strong compositions that remind me of Altar of Plagues only more straightforward, a great debut, I’ll be definitely looking forward to more material by these guys, highly recommended!

Eald - Through a world impatient for my death

Eald was brought to existence on the year 2001 by the hand of Heolstor, with the only purpose of delivering a message of discontent and perpetual frustration towards human kind. Thus, a first demo tape entitled “Fire shalt purify our land” was released by the german label Splendour Prod. , presenting a rather primitive and direct approach to Black Metal. The demo was surprisingly well received in the underground scene and several interviews were answered.

After putting the band in ice for a while, in winter 2009 Heolstor decided to continue his work with the band, but this time with a slightly different approach, perhaps a more artistic one. The songs present the same weariness towards mankind as before, but have gained in variation and complexity. Therefore, he requested the help of Ravager for the recording of a new demo, entitled “Through a world impatient for my death”, composed by four new tracks showing the evolution in the band’s sound.

The band is currently looking for a label to release their upcoming material, and any serious zine can ask for a promo copy or send their interviews.

This is for now definitely one of the best demo’s I’ve received, fast black metal with really killer song-writing, well worth a listen!

Nierty - Essence Of The Nightbringer

“Sonic industrialised black metal chaos” from the UK. This is their debut, originally recorded in ’08 and conceived as a single track, this is well made black metal with an industrialized feel thanks in part to the pounding drum assault, great!

Svartnad

Slow atmospheric black metal from Sweden; the first demo is basically average bm in the vein of Hypotherima and other similar bands while the second demo is more akin to stuff like Alcest, atmospheric rock mixed with black metal.

Necrofonia - Disonancia

Self-described as atmospheric depressive black gothic doom, it’s not actually that bad, I listened the whole thing through, the drum machine is frustrating but other than that it’s ok material.

Epic - Of Tears and Blood...

Awesome melodic black metal from France, a long forgotten release from '98. The sound reminds me of Swedish melodic / symphonic black metal from that time, really enjoyable! The line-up alone makes this a real hidden gem!

Innumerable Forms - Dark Worship

So, I'm cheating here (who the fuck cares), but I think this is something finally worth posting. Hopefully you guys know the amazing power violence act Mind Eraser, and if not maybe you know the unholy death act Funebrarum. If these names are over your head, don't worry you're just missing out on a lot. Innumerable Forms is Justin Detore, who has played in the aforementioned bands. Dark Worship is just that old school death metal that's super heavy and dark. Think Fallen Angel of Doom, Incantation's first three, Grave, etc. It's got a kinda black metal vibe, but it's just dark and heavy as hell. I highly recommend this, as it should appeal to fans of black metal and death metal alike.

Peste Noire - Ballade cuntre lo Anemi Francor

Third album from these awesome Frenchman. I haven’t listened to the second album but this album is more “up beat” compared with the debut but still filled with excellent compositions that get under your skin, also features weird interludes that give it a unique mood. A bit short but still an incredibly enjoyable release!

Distorted Cognitions - Incipient/Proletariat

Utterly insane industrialized black metal from this mysterious one-man band. This stuff sounds like it was recorded by fucking robots in some post-apocalyptic wasteland; the sound is beyond distorted and filled with earsplitting effects, ugly and utterly brilliant!

Bloodoline - Storm & Brilliance

One of the more underrated albums out there, released in ’05, this is one of my personal favorites from Spain. The album is full of memorable songs, the riffs are just insanely good and the vocals add a slightly psychedelic feel, everything is just perfectly apocalyptic and reminds me of both early and later Dodheimsgard. An absolutely mandatory listen!

Cascadian BM movie

I recently received an email from a Mr. Charles Spano, who is planing on creating an "experimental documentary" on NWBM. In his own words:

"This short, experimental documentary will combine B&W, slow-motion portraiture of members of the Cascadian Black Metal community with footage of them in wide, color landscapes, and non-digetic interview audio. I DO NOT in any way want to try to analyze or explain Black Metal culture, rather I’d like to give a deeply impressionistic view of members of this community. This will largely be accomplished with the emotive and aggrandizing qualities of portraiture which, using slow-motion, building sound design, and forest and snowy locations will have a genuine epic feeling."

At least it probably won't be as bad as "Until the Light Takes us". So if this is something you wanna see, go to his website and read more on it.

Hell

Aptly named, Hell conjure a horrowing and oddly bleak atmosphere with this tape. Mixing black metal, sludge, ambient, and drone, Hell gets your head banging and at other times it gets you holding the sheets tight. The juxtapositions are clear, as one track trudges in a super heavy and dark sludge tone, then goes to long stretches of noises and other effects eventually back to riffs. Black metal in terms of atmosphere, production, and vocals, sludge in terms of structure and guitar playing, and overall droning. This is the USA Hell, from Oregon.

I really like this, very minimal, and a great mixture of sludge/doom and black metal. Similar, but very different than Fleshpress (a lot less sludgey, more attention to atmosphere and all things grim). Highly recommended.

Kathaarsys - Verses In Vain

Second album from this excellent Spanish band. Really well made progressive black / death metal, song-writing and production are both of the highest level; musically sounds like a black metal version of Opeth. They’re currently on a European tour, be sure to support them if they play near you, also for those into technical stuff like Ephel Duath, check out their last album, it’s available for download on their myspace.
