Suuri Shamaani
Marko Laiho, who most of us recognize by the flashier nickname, Nuclear Holocausto Vengeance, is yet another metal musician (not that there are many) who has decided to steer away from guitar-oriented music for more 'avantgarde' territory. In this particular case, the road chosen is ambient music, or what Laiho himself dubs 'metamusic.'
Therefore, if Beherit specialized (in at least the majority of its existence) in extreme, crude metal music with minimal subtlety, then Suuri Shamaani is the exact, 180-degree turn in the opposite direction. Its sound is dark as you may have surmised but, in addition, bleak and lifeless as nothing I have yet heard from this artist. Dismal and obscure and consisting primarily of rumbling bass the ten tracks on this CD paint quite a barren landscape.
The result is stark and minimal, especially during the lengthier tracks, and I fear that most people who are unaccustomed to this sort of music will find it boring or too bizarre for their taste.
