A swedish black / death metal group formed in winter of 1992. Their music could be described as Melodic Black Metal, but they are incorporating Swedish Death Metal influences. Lord Belial is one of a few Swedish Black Metal bands who have stood against the winds of change since the early 90s. Their succesful releases have proved their position as one of the leaders in their genre.

Nortt

Denmark's ubiquitous Nortt is a reclusive vocalist and multi-instrumentalist specializing in what critics have labeled "depressive black funeral doom," and whose closest parallels include Australia's equally bleak and misanthropic diSEMBOWELMENT. Beginning his experiments in 1995, Nortt has recorded a number of demos (97's "Nattetale," 98's "Doeden," 99's "Graven") and official releases, most of them short-form singles and EPs like 2002's Hedengang and 2003's Gudsforladt. That same year saw a compilation of his scattered works unleashed as Mournful Monuments 1998-2002, but that's about as big a picture as we're likely to see of this intentionally obscure artist.

Graveland

Graveland is a Polish black metal band which was formed in 1992 by Rob Darken (Robert Fudali). Darken, who started Graveland as a solo project, was inspired by early black metal such as Bathory and Burzum's early works; but starting with "Thousand Swords", the band took on a powerful folk influence. As a result, later Graveland has sometimes been described as Viking metal or Pagan metal. Early Graveland lyrics were thematically connected to celtic pagan beliefs and were heavily anti-Christian, though with Graveland's development into an epic style, the lyrics have also thematically developed over time to glorify Aryanism ;then more recently, to glorifying Wotanism.

Paysage d'hiver

Paysage d'Hiver means "Winter Landscape". The man behind the name that doesn't hide musical directions is Wintherr (real name Tobias Möckl), from Switzerland. He also runs the label "Kunsthall Produktionen".
His music varies from synth-based dark ambient to atmospheric black metal. This is in my opinion the most effective Black Metal Band of the beginning of this new century.

Botulistum

Botulistum plays a sickeing kind of black metal , which they call "peat metal". Botulistum was formed in the beginning of 1998 by Nachtraaf (Stringraper and Drumprofaner) and Botmuyl (Over the top hysteria and sickening one snared violin). They started this band as a statement against commercial acts , humanity and other trends. The band split up again in 2002.

Marduk

True veterans of the black metal scene, having been formed back in 1990, Marduk has maintained steady popularity over the years. Their music is firmly in the old-school, blast-beat, keyboardless realm of black metal, with few if any nods to melody of subtlety. Sometimes it can be a bit much (Panzer Division Marduk, in particular, is just a blur of black metal noise, pretty much all one speed -- fast), but they are brutal and intense and represent classic Scandinavian black metal as well as any band. Compared to Panzer, the newer albums such as La Grande Danse Macabre show some variation in pace and structure, but really not much has changed from previous albums -- it's still Marduk all the way.[ BNR]

Dusk

In 1995 , in the end of the winter and in the beginning of the spring Dusk appeared from nothing. It had been growing in the forgotten dark forest until the time came for it to be shown by shadow. And so in the autumn "Fight Of The Soul" demo was created together with Gorgo and Akharu , which showed Dusk for other too. Dusk was rough and gave darkness and pain for everyonewho could hear it.

Ohtar

Ohtar first made waves with their demo "The Empire Of White Power." I'm not sure why, since you can barely hear a fucking thing on there, but fortunately the hype was not for nothing. Ohtar is one of the few Polish bands that has an identity independent of Graveland and that actually has a unique sound. Ohtar isn't really derivative of anything, managing to be brutal but still retaining a sense of melodic structure throughout. The compilation "Woodland Desolation" is essential black metal listening, appearing at number 18 on my "20 Best Black Metal Albums" list. Their followup "When I Cut The Throat" is also great, but has a more traditionally heavy metal bent. Ohtar is definitely one of the most promising bands in the Polish scene and is one to watch out for.

Nazgul

Nazgûl are a Black Metal band from Italy whose two members are Zakrathor and Thornset. They describe theirself as "Orkish Black Metal".

Their particular brand of BM is both melodic and harsh, but above all else it's epic. Aside from incorporating elements of folk and classical music in their sound, it's noteworthy that all their lyrics are exclusively written in Latin.

They have so far released one album, De Expugnatione Elfmuth (2002). It deals with the war waged in Middle-Earth by the forces of the Dark Lord against the human and elven resistance, and the defeat of the latter. The course of these battles is represented musically as much as it's told through the lyrics.

Seigneur Voland

Xaphan conceptualized Seigneur Voland in 1996 while serving a prison sentence for grave desecration. he was released in April 1999 and recruited other members.

In the Middle Ages, 'Seigneur Voland' was the name given to Satan in the North of France.

Behemoth

Arguably one of the best bands to originate from Poland, Behemoth was formed in 1991 by Nergal, who through many lineup changes is the one constant in the band. Their early work was squarely in the black metal camp, forging a style that really wasn't radically different from others in the genre. By the time of Satanica, however, Behemoth started incorporating death metal influences and matured into an extreme metal force. Since the release of Thelema.6 they have consistently released quality albums, blending the best of black and death metal, creating a vicious and original style, bolstered by a flawless production that brings out the best in the songs. A very recommended band for extreme metal fans.
