Liturgy - Renihilation

Holy shit what a release! Debut from this new US band. An amazing album, buzzing and dissonant guitar-work with perfect drumming all coated in a great raw sound; the vocals are a bit low in the mix adding to the bleakly chaotic nature of the music. The song-writing is extremely unique while at the same time being pure black metal. Can’t recommend this enough, best bm release this year in my opinion!

This album is all over the blogs and everyone is talking about in such grandiose terms, but for whatever reason I could not get into it at all. In fact, i thought it was downright awful. I'll have to give it another go obviously, but I don't hear any of the awesomeness that everyone is talking about.

I can usually trust your judgement blindly so here goes!

I knew this would be up your ally, do you happen to have the immortal life ep? They're locals and i heard somewhere that one of the dudes used to be in Birthday Boyz, anyone know if that's correct?

The drummer actually plays the most minimal drumkit I've ever seen - just a snare, single bass drum and two cymbals. That's it. It's actually pretty appropriate for the music. It's meant to be very minimal music

I find it very "Orthrelm-ish".

I do wish they varied the beats a bit, but I think that's kind of the point.

You were right, Khaos, this is fucking excellent, best new BM band I've heard in a while.

Absolutely amazing. Bought this the day it came out after hearing a preview track.

I think within the states misunderstood the idea of balck metal, fuck! these adolescents and their image could play stoner rock :a parody of black metal like so many.

Very promising!
The vox are generic and also down too much in the mix.
Consistently involving. Much less showy and more to my taste than the Krallice.
Scarcely worthy of comparison to WitTR( 'Black Cascade' remains my fave of this year, along with A Looming Resonance') or Weakling in either style or quality..
**There is noting to understand or conversely misunderstand about Black Metal: you either like a particular album or you don't. :)
